Perimeter

The Global Influenza Hospital Surveillance Network (GIHSN) is a platform able to generate strong epidemiological and medical evidence on influenza severity and to support vaccine strain selection through timely sharing of clinical and laboratory data. GIHSN can inform policy decisions and national health authorities and serve as a network for improved influenza related capacity building and response.

Data is collected during each flu season with on-line questionnaire on the GIHSN platform and can be visualized in the analysis modules.

The GIHSN network includes currently 23 sites worldwide:

  • Argentina

  • Bangladesh

  • Brazil (Curitiba)

  • Canada

  • China - Shangai

  • China - Wuhan

  • France - Lyon

  • France - PARIS

  • India

  • Ivory Coast

  • Kenya

  • Lebanon

  • Mexico

  • Nepal

  • Peru

  • Romania

  • Russian Federation - Moscow

  • Russian Federation - Saint Petersburg

  • Serbia

  • South Africa

  • Spain - Valencia

  • Turkey

  • Ukraine

The sites are not-for-profit institutions coordinating local hospitals networks. In May each year there is a call for proposal for the upcoming flu season. A selection of sites is done by the Executive Committee of the Foundation for Influenza Epidemiology based on the quality of the proposal and the capacities of the site.

Data source

The data visualized on the platform is collected by the sites (see list here above) through on-line questionnaires that are established by the Scientific Committee of the network. The variables collected might differ slightly between seasons.
